I wanted to take a brief pause from our usual ops-focused programming to share a piece by my friend Helen Mayer.

When Helen found out she had cancer — just months after raising a $23M Series A from Sequoia as a solo founder — she went looking for examples of other founders who had led their teams while facing illness.She found little publicly available, so she decided to write about it herself.In her Medium post, she shares not only her story, but also the specific tactics she used: the order in which she told executives, team members, and investors; the structure she used for individual conversations; and even the text of the email she sent out to each member of her team.

I don’t think we talk enough about the challenges of being a founder, of having hard conversations, or of talking to people about illness. I’m hoping that if you, like me several months ago, find yourself up late at night searching for a framework to tell people around you that you’re struggling with your health — whether physical or mental — this might be helpful.
